Second Screen and Social TV growth

As part of the development process for the free RealPlayer video app launched in August, RealNetworks conducted a user survey.

Some of the findings along with data from Nielsen and Pew Internet is illustrated below as an infographic.

As with a recent study in Germany by smartclip, the indication is that tablets are the preferred device for second screen use, just slightly ahead of smartphones. Unfortunately data on laptop PCs is not included.

The most popular activity for second screen use is checking emails, which is unlikely to bear relevance to the main screen content. However, an average 37% look up information related to what they are watching,

In 2010, watching news and TV shows on mobile devices was only a daily event for 7 percent of RealPlayer users. In the two years since, that figure has leaped, more than tripling, to 23 percent in 2012. This upward trend is expected to continue in-line with improvements to Wi-Fi access and smart phone functionality.
